So after writing such a riveting article on my new-found love for myfitnesspal.com, with the start of the new school year I decided to return to Weight Watchers. Why? Well there are several reasons but none of them have to do with myfitnesspal. I LOVE My Fitness Pal. It’s just I lack the discipline to commit to it at this time. Apparently the only way I can stay committed to tracking calories is if I know I’m paying good money to do so. So back to Weight Watchers I go. Yes, this is sad but it’s true. This time I’ve decided that to really make health and fitness a habit I will try the system for more than 3 months. I’ll probably try 6 months to a year…or longer. Although I was confident I had grasped all I needed to learn the first time around, apparently I hadn’t learned what to do when you hit a a snag or rather a gigantic boulder in the road and crash. So like my mom always says, “If you get lost, just start from the beginning.” That’s exactly what I’m doing. I mean I’ve done it before and I can do it again…Right?

Sidenote: Since rejoining Weigh Watchers I’ve lost a total of 17.4 in 6 weeks. (I know that’s a little bit fast but I’m happy to be making some progress.) :~) IT WORKS PEOPLE! It does!

Hello Cyboys and Cygirls!

I hope this message finds you well. I’ve decided to keep myself focused and hopefully to help you all stay focused on health, happiness, and self-love, I will be  featuring at least one new song per month on Girl vs Girth. Why? Well, I told you before I use music to push myself forward aka motivate myself to get up and do something! So, I want to share my recent picks for motivational songs with you! Now, I’m not guaranteeing that the song will be fitness related, but it will be a song to motivate , inspire, and urge you to keep on keeping on…and sometimes it’s just going to be something I’m grooving to at the moment. :~)

Now, I know you all know Beyoncé’s Get Me Bodied. It had us sweating to bits in the club and of course is a permanent staple on my workout playlists. However, en-light of Mrs. Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign Beyoncé has been gracious enough to remix the song and gear it toward getting kids off of the couch and moving! Not only that but the Campaign also discusses nutrition , the elimination of food deserts, as well as the importance of parents and caregivers also being active healthy examples for their children. So as Beyoncé said in Get Me Bodied, “Snap for the kids. Snap for the kids. Snap in a circle three times…” *snap* *snap*

Maybe you didn’t know but I love Mrs. Obama to bits. I think she is a brilliant, inspirational, intelligent person and I am proud that she is starting a campaign to fight childhood obesity. Seeing as I was an obese child and am now an obese adult I understand the importance of instituting healthy eating and activity habits as a youngster. I wish someone recognized this problem when I was young instead of calling my obvious obesity “baby fat.” (Sidenote: I was 10…that was just regular fat.) Don’t think you have to be a kid to take part in this campaign; it’s for all of us: short, tall, big, small, black, white, young, old…It’s about getting America moving and I, for one, am partaking in this with full force.

So today I urge you to learn the flash dance/workout routine from the video. It’s easy. Do it around your house…In the club…with friends…at weddings…IN CHURCH! AMEN! (ok maybe not in church…lol) But you get the picture. It’s fun! It will get you pumped to workout.  Instead of jogging or running to warm up (*yawn* BO-RIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGG) DANCE TO THIS! I’m not a fitness expert. I’m not sure how many calories this song burns but I can tell you this, as a fellow fatty I was up dancing in no time. :~) So give it a try. The song says it best, “I ain’t worried doing me tonight. A little sweat ain’t neva hurt nobody. Don’t just stand there on a wall! Everybody Move Your Body. Move Your Body. MOVE YOUR BODY!”

Now, I’m not sure about you but I don’t live in the best neighborhood. I mean I wouldn’t say it’s bad or anything, but it’s pretty DARN bad. :~) So what’s a Fat girl to do if walking around her neighborhood isn’t conducive to her health? Hit the gym! “But wait, aren’t gyms kind of expensive?” Yes, you are correct Reader, but I have a new secret for you. Check out some of the local YMCAs.

That’s right. “I’m talking ’bout the Y-M-C-A. Help me sing it now, Y-M-C-A-A.” Now, I’m not saying that all Y’s are the same, or that they’re filled with half-naked men dressed in sexually ambiguous costumes. (Thank goodness…) I am saying that it’s a great way to support a wonderful organization and get F-I-T at the same time. Also keep in mind a lot of Y’s offer many amenities that more upscale fitness facilities would charge you an arm, a leg, and a toe for. For example: My local Y offers several Fitness classes such as Zumba, Kickboxing, Step and Spin Classes for no additional fee. They also have two swimming pools, a water slide, sauna, steam room and personal trainers. I’m not saying that all the amenities are free, (there is a fee for all aquatic, yoga, Pilates classes and personal training), but 9 times out of 10 what you want to do is free. Heck, if it’s not I doubt it will be incredibly expensive. Sometimes they offer fitness assessments, or a free orientation to the gym equipment when you sign-up for a membership. Also if you can’t afford a membership they offer scholarship based on your income. All you have to do is ask when you want to apply for a membership, some even have corporate discounts.

So in conclusion, instead of spending buckets of money at a gym or high-priced fitness facility try your local YMCA. Not only are they a great community organization, but for the cost of your membership they also offer lots of seminars and functions to educate you on health and wellness. Sometimes they have classes, or clubs focused on religion, reading, dancing, etc. Also, you would be funding an organization that provides a positive place for kids to go after school, as well as an organization that contributes globally to several relief efforts. So I say support your local YMCA today!
